Rebranding is scary: "they will stop recognising us". But more often the brand is already losing customers — just slowly, and it does not show in reports. Let us look at when to change, what exactly, and how to make the transition without losses.
Seven signs it is time
- The logo was made "at the start" 7–10 years ago and only the business has grown since.
- You are embarrassed to show your business card or website to a major client.
- New lines of business have appeared that do not fit the old name.
- Competitors have refreshed — and on the shelf or in search results you look older.
- The audience has changed: 25-year-olds have arrived, and the brand speaks to 45-year-olds.
- Merger, new owner, entering another region or country.
- A reputational trail you want to leave behind.
Three scenarios
| Scenario | What changes | When | Timeline / price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restyling | The logo is cleaned up, the style modernised, the name stays | The brand works overall but looks dated | 3–5 weeks, from 600,000 ₸ |
| Rebranding | New mark, style, carriers; name and positioning adjusted | The audience or lines of business have changed | 6–8 weeks, from 900,000 ₸ |
| Relaunch | New name, philosophy, identity, packaging, website | The brand hinders growth or drags reputation | from 2 months, from 2,200,000 ₸ |
How not to lose customers
Keep the "recognition anchors"
Colour, the shape of the mark, the character of the font — at least one element must carry over into the new brand. Customers recognise by details.
A transition period
1–3 months when the old and new marks appear together: "this is what we look like now". On social media, on the sign, in the newsletter.
Explain the reason
A short story: why we are changing and what stays the same. People accept change when they understand its meaning.
Inside first, then outside
The team must know and be able to explain the rebranding before the customers do. One employee saying "I was not told" costs trust.
Change everything at once
The most common mistake is a new logo on the website and the old one on the sign for six months. Make a list of carriers and a switch-over date.
What to check before starting
- Trademark: the new name/mark is free and registrable.
- Domain and social media accounts under the new name.
- Budget for replacing carriers — it is often bigger than the design budget.
Example
For the Kinetik rehabilitation clinic we refreshed the mark and style while keeping the colour code — patients kept recognising the clinic, and the new image brought in a younger audience. More examples in the branding portfolio.
